Lomond wine estate has
added more gold to its collection of medals by returning to the podium at the
esteemed Concours Mondial du Sauvignon in France, this time for its Lomond Sugarbush
Sauvignon Blanc 2012. The achievement follows last year’s gold for the estate
at the same event, which singles out the stars from an international array of
Sauvignon blanc wines.
The Lomond Sugarbush
Sauvignon Blanc 2012 was made from single vineyard grapes nurtured by a unique
climate and nutrient-rich soils. Situated in the Uilenkraal River Valley,
Lomond is one of only a handful of producers permitted to carry the Cape
Agulhas appellation on their labels. The region’s cool maritime breezes during
summer and diversity of lean, gravelly soils make it ideal for single-vineyard
wine.
“We are delighted by this
latest gold medal,” says Lomond winemaker Kobus Gerber. “The Sugarbush
Sauvignon Blanc 2012 will be known for its exceptional minerality and
flintiness, which reflects the location of the vineyard. Having matured for two
years in bottle, the wine is also a prime example of how well good Sauvignon
blancs can develop over time.”
The Lomond Sugarbush
Sauvignon Blanc, named after a type of Protea that grows on the farm, has
consistently shone in competitions and wine shows since it was first produced
in 2005. Particular vintages have received among others, a trophy at the Old Mutual
Trophy
Wine Show; Gran D’Or at
Michelangelo International Wine Awards and Double Gold at Veritas.
The estate’s other wines
also enjoy widespread acclaim. Last year alone, the Lomond 2011 Cat’s Tail
Syrah was awarded a gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards in London while
the 2012 vintage of Lomond Sauvignon Blanc received a gold medal at the
Concours Mondial du Sauvignon. Lomond wines took three Gold medals at Veritas
2013 too.
The achievements speak of
skilled winemaking and viticultural practises as well as a respect for the
land. Lomond is a member of both the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy and the Biodiversity
and Wine Initiative (BWI), which rewards producers for sustainable wine-growing
practices. It also applies the principles of IPW (Integrated Production
of Wine), a voluntary environmental sustainability scheme, for pest and
disease control in its vineyards.
This year, the Concours
Mondial du Sauvignon saw more than 50 judges representing 15 nationalities,
evaluate 751 entries before singling out the Lomond Sugarbush Sauvignon Blanc
2012 for the sought-after gold medal.
The wine delivers aromas
of citrus, green pepper and green figs, while on the palate it is full-bodied
with a crisp, clean and sweet finish. It is enjoyable on its own or with food -
ideally grilled fish or lemon-roasted chicken and even desserts.
The wine is priced at
around R110 per bottle and is available at leading wine retailers countrywide.
